Visiting the Trevi Fountain just became a bit more costly as Rome introduces a new entry fee in an effort to manage tourist crowds and generate funds for maintenance. Since Monday, tourists wishing to get close to this iconic landmark now need to pay a modest fee of 2 euros (which is approximately $2.35). This initiative aims to enhance the visitor experience at one of the most renowned fountains worldwide, famously featured in Federico Fellini’s classic film "La Dolce Vita."
Interestingly, the initial reactions from visitors were quite positive. Many seemed undeterred by the new fee, viewing it as a reasonable cost for the opportunity to enjoy the fountain without the hassle of large crowds. Ilhan Musbah, a tourist from Morocco, remarked, "Previously, it was quite difficult to access the fountain due to the massive throng of people. Now, everything is much simpler. You can capture great photos, and you feel relaxed. Plus, 2 euros is hardly a burden."
This new fee comes alongside a recently instituted 5-euro (almost $6) ticket charge for several city museums. It’s worth noting that residents of Rome are exempt from these fees. The revenue generated from this initiative is intended not only to help maintain the city's cultural treasures but also to increase the number of museums that are free to registered locals.
The introduction of this fee is part of a broader strategy by the city to regulate the influx of tourists in particularly busy areas, improve the overall experience for visitors, and offset the costs associated with preserving Rome's rich cultural heritage. City officials estimate that this measure could bring in an additional 6.5 million euros (around $7.6 million) each year.
The decision to implement the fee was influenced by the success of a previous trial that limited the number of visitors allowed at the fountain by creating organized lines and pathways for entering and exiting the area. Alessandro Onorato, Rome’s tourism assessor, expressed surprise at how little the fee was compared to similar attractions around the world. He stated, "I think tourists might be taken aback by the fact that Rome is asking for just 2 euros for such a prestigious site. If the Trevi Fountain were situated in New York, they would likely charge at least $100."
This fee system mirrors ticketing approaches adopted at other major sites in Rome, such as the Pantheon, and reflects similar measures taken in cities like Venice, where they imposed a complex day-trip tax to combat overtourism and enhance livability for their residents. In comparison to these measures, the fees in Italy remain relatively low, especially when contrasted with the significant price increase recently announced by French authorities for the Louvre Museum, where ticket prices surged from 22 euros ($26) to 32 euros ($37) for most non-European visitors.
Tourists have the option to pay this fee in advance online, allowing them access to view the fountain during peak daytime hours. However, those wishing to admire the stunning Baroque architecture from above in the piazza can still do so for free, especially after hours when close access is restricted.
The Trevi Fountain itself is an awe-inspiring sight, featuring the god Oceanus surrounded by cascading waters flowing over travertine rocks into a shallow turquoise pool. This is the very spot where Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg famously swam in "La Dolce Vita." While swimming is no longer allowed, folklore suggests that throwing a coin over one’s shoulder while making a wish guarantees a return trip to Rome.
