Seventeen years after the whispers began, Sam Raimi has finally silenced the persistent rumors surrounding the villain for his unmade Spider-Man 4! For years, fans have speculated about who would have donned the villainous mantle, with one name frequently popping up: Rachel McAdams.
It's a tale as old as Hollywood itself: a highly anticipated sequel, a director with a vision, and a cast of rumors that take on a life of their own. After Sam Raimi masterfully helmed the first three Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire, the development of a fourth installment was well underway. However, as is often the case with ambitious projects, creative differences and the relentless march of production timelines led to Raimi stepping away from the director's chair. Before Sony ultimately decided to reboot the franchise with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man, the rumor mill churned, suggesting that the talented Rachel McAdams was in contention to portray the iconic Black Cat, a character often depicted as an antagonist.
But here's where it gets controversial... McAdams herself had previously addressed these rumors, firmly denying any talks for the role. Now, in a recent conversation with CinemaBlend while promoting his latest project, Send Help (a film in which McAdams shines), Raimi was directly asked about the persistent speculation. He unequivocally confirmed that McAdams was never in discussions for Spider-Man 4. Furthermore, to the best of his recollection, there were no auditions held for a female villain at all.
Instead, Raimi reiterated a piece of information that has been circulating for some time: his own discussions with the acclaimed actor John Malkovich to bring the menacing Vulture to life. "No. Yeah, we never had auditions for a female villain that I'm aware of," Raimi stated. "Look, I talked to John Malkovich about playing the Vulture, and he was wonderful, and we got along great. But the movie never went."
This definitive statement arrives on the heels of Raimi sharing another significant update regarding Spider-Man 4 with ScreenRant. He expressed that it wouldn't be the right move for him to "go back and try and resurrect my version of this story." He thoughtfully added, "I handed the torch off to someone else. And I think they’ve got to keep running with the storyline and the audience that is now following the torchbearer."
While Raimi has closed the chapter on his Spider-Man directorial journey, his connection to the Marvel universe remains strong. In 2022, he stepped in to direct Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness after the original director, Scott Derrickson, departed. And this is the part most people miss... coincidentally, Rachel McAdams also starred in this very film, reprising her role as Dr. Christine Palmer from the previous Doctor Strange movie, and even lent her voice to the character in an episode of the animated series What If...?.
Even though Raimi's Spider-Man 4 never materialized, the fervent hope among fans for more of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man persists. His return, alongside Andrew Garfield's, in 2021's *Spider-Man: No Way Home* has fueled speculation about their potential involvement in upcoming multiverse-spanning epics like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. These colossal films are poised to weave together the threads of various Marvel realities, potentially bringing back beloved characters from earlier film eras.
Meanwhile, a new chapter for the web-slinger is indeed on the horizon. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, featuring Tom Holland's MCU iteration of Spider-Man, is slated for release on July 31, 2026. This upcoming film boasts an impressive cast, including Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, and Sadie Sink in a yet-to-be-revealed role. The directorial reins are in the capable hands of Destin Daniel Cretton, known for his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
