A new and controversial collision sport, the Run Nation Championship (RNC), is making waves in Sydney, with a staggering 5,000 tickets sold for its second edition. This brutal sport has sparked intense debate, leaving concussion experts concerned and some athletes enthralled.
Newcastle's Lochlan Piper, a forward with a passion for contact, is one such athlete. He sees RNC as an exhilarating experience, embracing the energy and violence of the game.
"It's like a boxer's high, an adrenaline rush like no other. You against them, a true test of strength and skill," Piper explains.
But here's where it gets controversial...
The sport's premise is simple: two athletes charge towards each other, aiming to knock each other down. The rules dictate where contact can be made, but the potential for serious injury is undeniable.
"We've seen the devastating effects of repetitive head injuries in professional sports. RNC seems to be a reaction against these safety measures," says Dr. Rowena Mobbs, a sports neurologist.
And this is the part most people miss...
RNC organizers claim to have implemented strict protocols and rules to prevent head-on collisions, a common issue in previous versions of the sport. They've worked closely with medical professionals and have doctors and paramedics on-site to assess and treat any injuries.
However, Dr. Mobbs argues that these measures might give a false sense of security.
"Every collision, no matter how minor it seems, can cause microscopic brain injuries. These activities are high-risk, and the presence of medical professionals, while well-intentioned, might create an illusion of safety."
Despite the concerns, athletes like Jayden Young, whose brother plays NRL for the Canberra Raiders, are ready to take on the challenges of RNC.
"We understand the risks, but the thrill of the sport is worth it. It's a choice we make, knowing the potential sacrifices," Young says.
