Oleksandr Zinchenko Joins Ajax! Arsenal Confirm €1.5M Deal | Eredivisie Transfer News (2026)

Arsenal's Defender Switch: A Controversial Move?

In a surprising turn of events, Arsenal FC has confirmed the sale of Ukrainian defender Oleksandr Zinchenko to Ajax, just before the transfer deadline. This move has sparked curiosity and raised questions among football enthusiasts.

Zinchenko, a seasoned left-back, had been in negotiations with the Dutch club for quite some time. Over the weekend, he traveled to Amsterdam to finalize the deal, undergo a medical, and officially join Ajax.

The transfer, reportedly worth a modest €1.5 million plus potential Champions League bonuses, marks the end of Zinchenko's challenging loan spell at Nottingham Forest. He has signed a short-term contract with Ajax until the end of the season, and his debut could come as early as next weekend when Ajax, currently in fourth place, face AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie.

But here's where it gets interesting: Ajax is currently being managed by Fred Grim, who stepped in as caretaker after the sacking of former boss John Heitinga. Heitinga, now an assistant at Tottenham, had only been in charge for five months before his departure.

And this is the part most people miss: Zinchenko will be reuniting with his former Arsenal teammate, Takehiro Tomiyasu, who joined Ajax on loan in December. Tomiyasu's contract with Arsenal was terminated early by mutual consent, and now the two players will be teammates again.

Ajax's director of football, Marijn Beuker, had this to say about the signing: "With Oleksandr, we are bringing in an experienced player who instantly boosts our quality in the pursuit of Champions League football. As a left-back, he is tactically sound and provides defensive stability, perfectly aligning with our playing style."

Zinchenko's defensive prowess and ability to contribute to build-up play and break lines have been highlighted as key attributes. Beuker added, "We are delighted to have him strengthen our squad at least until the summer."

However, the move is not without controversy. Zinchenko had a successful stint at Manchester City, winning multiple Premier League titles and other major trophies. He then joined Arsenal in a £32 million deal in 2022, following a similar path to Gabriel Jesus.

Under Mikel Arteta, Zinchenko became a regular at left-back, making 91 appearances and scoring three goals. But the arrival of Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna in a £42 million deal in 2024 saw Zinchenko's playing time diminish, and he was eventually sent on loan to Nottingham Forest.

At Forest, Zinchenko made only 10 appearances under three different managers, with just five of those being in the Premier League. He became surplus to requirements under Sean Dyche, who preferred regular left-back Neco Williams.

So, the question remains: Was this move a wise decision for both Arsenal and Ajax? What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
